Lenten Hours of Prayer
You're invited to join us in the Liturgy of the Hours for Lent. Daily prayer rhythms also known as the Liturgy of the Hours are a way to mark and sanctify the day. This is three 10-minute prayers totaling 30-minutes a day: morning, midday and evening. This rhythm was an essential part of Jesus’ life and modeled for us as a way to live in his yoke. This may feel impossible to include in a life of caring for children, working stressful jobs packed with meetings, travel, commuting schedules and the like but perhaps if we ask for creativity and a spirit of perseverance to go before us, it can be possible.
Much like the Sabbath was made for our benefit, regular rhythms of prayer are a gift to help us thrive, not to fulfill a false sense of obligation. Most prayer times will not be physically together or perhaps even at the exact same time but will become a practice that forms a shared experience as a community.
The Practice: Liturgy of the Hours
Morning: Pray the Lord’s Prayer. Pray the Lord’s Prayer slowly, meditating on each line for the day in front of us. Take 10 minutes to see what the Lord wants to surface, savoring each piece of this Matt. 6 prayer.
Midday: Pray the Psalms. Each day, pray a Psalm; ask the Lord to highlight a word, phrase or theme in the Psalm that is something specific for you/us that day and notice the difference between simply reading the Psalm to get through it.
Evening: Prayers of Thanksgiving. Using insights from the Examen prayer become aware of God’s presence as you remember your day. Express gratitude for the joys, gifts and blessings you received as you practice being thankful for 10 minutes at the end of the day.
